Bury Me In The Garden

When I’m gone, my darling, she’s going to bury me in the garden
lay my weary head under the soil
raise a crop above me of cooking herbs and ivy
I will climb my way back to our loving home
Stay with me darling, embrace me in silence
hold me until the morning breaks the sky
Stay with me darling, enfold me in darkness
I knew nothing until you held me in your arms
When I’m gone, my darling, she’s going to bury me in the garden
lay my weary head under the soil.
My body has been borrowed from the earthworm and the sparrow
I am everything that cycles and returns
Stay with me darling, embrace me in silence
hold me until the morning breaks the sky
Stay with me darling, enfold me in darkness
I knew nothing until you held me in your arms

Cradle Robber

I want to steal you from your man
take you far away
build a home up in the forest
lay to sleep on your breast.
So hide the things we do at night
your husband drinks in the town.
I cross the long fields and pastures,
find you working in the yard.
I want to steal you from your man
he lays to sleep against your back
my child swells against your stomach
a raven tangle of wind.
So hide the things we do alone
I press my lips on your skin
and sing a song of the forest
I am the egg-thief, the cradle robber

I met my darling Nancy when she was seventeen
saw her when she was dancing, sent a shiver right through me
we lived down by the river, about twenty miles from town
we worked hard for our dollars, build a home and settled down
I fell asleep in the loving arms of the one who’s dear to me
I dreamed I crossed the prairies, unbridled and free
I saw a scene of violence rising up in front of me
I recognized my darling, saw a stranger strike her down
terrified by omens, I went screaming twisted around
I woke up in the loving arms of the one who’s dear to me
That morning we went riding for a wander through the snow
I was fractured by the visage of a man I did not know
I knew that in that moment, with a clarity of mind
I recognized that stranger from my wanderings through the night
The stranger, he looked up at me, I saw the devil in his eyes
I came back to the township with a pistol in my hand
I broke into the barroom and I set upon that man
my eyes shone with destruction, I was screaming out your name
I knocked him to the floorboards and I took a lethal aim
I stood up tall, I raised my gun, I was screaming out your name
They dragged me from the barroom, and they hung me from a tree
I saw my darling Nancy standing right in front of me
her eyes, they shone with sorrow, she was screaming out my name
and as my soul departed, I was smiling just the same
My darling, I had saved her from a wicked death foretold

Wandering Man

Ten thousand miles since I left my home,
West through the rockies and North through the storm
I left my darling in a good standing home,
went riding the highway, the unbroken horse
Darling, oh darling, will you stay by my side?
Lay down beside me and sleep through the night?
My bed has gone empty, the nights have grown cold
I’ve been sleeping without you, been sleeping alone
How many roads have you gone down?
How many times have you come through this town?
I will not grow lonely and old by myself
I will not be the woman of a wandering man
I dreamed of my darling as I lay down to rest
The grey on her temple put a fist through my chest
I woke to the morning and I faced it alone
I’ve been riding the highway, now I’m coming back home
How many roads have you gone down?
How many times have you come through this town?
I will not grow lonely and old by myself
I will not be the woman of a wandering man
Ten thousand miles since I left my home,
West through the rockies and North through the storm
I left my darling in a good standing home,
I’ve been riding the highway, now I’m coming back home
